Effectively Managing Indigenous Business Assets

Carey Group is the largest 100% Indigenous-owned group of companies in Australia.

Established in 1995 by Daniel Tucker AM, Carey Group provides mining, civil construction, training, structural, mechanical and piping services through its various entities.

Carey Mining, which provides mining, bulk earthworks and mine site rehabilitation services, has numerous accolades to its name, including being certified in:

ISO 9001

Quality management systems

ISO 14001

Environmental management systems

ISO 45001

Occupational health and safety management systems

ISO 55001

Asset management systems

As an equipment-intensive business, Carey Mining sought certification of its asset management system to ISO 55001 Asset Management to help demonstrate effective management of their plant and equipment.
ISO 55001 was introduced into the mix of management standards in 2014 to help organisations standardise the practices around management of large complex assets.

Standards demonstrate competence

Carey Mining manages and operates some complex assets as the contract service provider for a large resources company. As part of the contractual obligations, Carey Mining was required to demonstrate that they have effective policies, practices and procedures to support these important assets.
While Carey Mining has implemented their other standards across the entire company, they decided to focus ISO 55001 on the particular assets they own and deploy to projects for resources companies. This is one of the great features of the ISO 55001 management standard, in that by clearly defining the scope of the assets being managed companies can limit the certification to a particular site and asset.

The big benefit for Carey Mining was the independent set of eyes looking at their practices around the particular assets.

Benefits

Carey Mining have found that ISO 55001 is complementary to their existing standards, and so while they manage similar assets under ISO 9001, the extension to ISO 55001 was not difficult — they already have much of the documentation and business practices in place.

Carey has a strong focus on Indigenous procurement. They engaged TCQSI-Yaran, a joint venture between TQCSI and Yaran Business Services, to conduct the relevant assessments and reviews for certification. TCQSI-Yaran is a majority owned Indigenous business which provides auditing and certification of ISO management systems.
